If you’ve been participating in weight training for quite some time, then there are certainly things that you’ve learned along the way that you wish you had known from day one. Following are some of those facts that those of you new to lifting weights would be smart to keep in mind:
1. Keep your reasons for working out in the forefront of your mind. Knowing why you’re lifting weights and focusing on that reason (or reasons) will help you to stay motivated and stick with it for the long run.
2. Don’t expect a quick fix. Weight training the right way is important, and it will take time for you to see results. In order to be successful, you must look at your weight lifting as a lifestyle change instead of as a temporary way to lose some weight or get in shape.
3. Give yourself some time to transform your body. Commit to at least three months so that you can see the good results of lifting weights.
4. Remember: quality over quantity. You may not see results quickly, but they will be more long-term than if you were to go with one of those gimmicky “quick fixes”. When it comes to building muscle and getting healthy, it’s not about lifting weights all day every day. It’s about lifting weights the right way.
5. Don’t even look at the scale. For the first couple of weeks, you’ll most likely see no change. In fact, your weight could increase due to your muscle gain. This is a good thing, not a bad thing! So skip weighing yourself for the first couple of weeks until your body can catch up with your new muscle gain and start losing fat.
These are just five things to keep in mind as you begin your journey weight training.
